Kilmore is approximately 60 kilometres from Melbourne and is believed to be Victoria’s oldest inland town and the geographic heart of Victoria. It was originally a stop over town for travellers and droving teams and later for prospective miners and families travelling to the gold fields. After the trip from Melbourne, the long haul up Pretty Sally Hill meant that both man and beast required rest. Today, Kilmore is a vibrant township boasting premier racing facilities, a range of quality sporting facilities, excellent schools, hospital, cafés, bakeries and classic country pubs with open fires. With a regular V-Line train service from Kilmore East Station and easy freeway access, Kilmore offers the benefits of country living within easy reach of Melbourne. Kilmore was a stronghold of early Celtic settlers from Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall, and retains a strong Celtic area to this day, making it the ideal home for the annual Celtic Festival. Many of Kilmore’s oldest existing buildings are made of local bluestone including the hospital, old court house, former post office, churches, goal, and a monument to Hume and Hovell near the golf course.
